About Us

A bunch of bird-watching docents started a project to record the birds in a garden of California native plants in 2015.

This garden is commonly known as Tilden Botanic Garden because its 10.5 acres are surrounded by Tilden Regional Park in the east bay of San Francisco. Its real name, however, is Regional Parks Botanic Garden. It is sometimes confused with UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, located nearby and having a native California section.

After surveying the birds weekly for a year (weather permitting), we switched to biweekly surveys in 2016. The accumulation of data on species, frequency of occurrence, plant use, nesting, etc., has reached a point where descriptions can be better than anecdotal. This blog is an attempt to share our knowledge with a wider audience, be that plant enthusiasts, bird enthusiasts, or both.

We will try to abide by the following rules of blogging:
1. keep it short.
2. brighten it with illustration.
3. write some new thing that we didn't know before.
4. post it only after circling it among us for feedback.
